DAN 212 - Dance: Power, Art & Movement

(3 credits)
In this survey course, dance will be examined in its varied styles with special attention to the society in which it exists. Focus will be upon cultivating an understanding of dance as an expression of the changing cultural, social, and political climate from which it emerges. Students will explore the diverse aesthetic, multi-cultural, and historical aspects of western culture’s dance forms and their relationship to non-western cultures. Through readings, lectures, viewing of dance, and participation in dance styles, an understanding of dance in past and present society will be developed, as well as global viewpoint of how dance fits into the contemporary world.
