Special tracks: Two areas of concentration are available within the Communication Management major: health & mediation and organizational communication & leadership sequences.

Career information: A major in Communication Management can prepare students for a variety of careers involving organizational consulting, health care advocacy, dispute resolution, and management of communication divisions of major companies. Organizations need people who are sensitive to communication problems and can use their expertise to mediate disputes. Healthcare organizations seek employees with sensitivity to doctor-patient communication and an appreciation for the cultural context in which health communication takes place. Corporations seek specialists in team-building and leadership, aspects of the communication management major. Expertise in communication management should also be helpful to those who want to apply their expertise to solving social problems and improving quality of life in Northeast Ohio.

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Management: The Communication Management major offers students a unique combination of academic excellence and career-related training.  This program acquaints students with major theories of human communication, research applications to specific contexts, and insights as to how communication can be used successfully in everyday life. The course work also develops skill sets critical to students’ career aspirations.

 

 

A minimum total number of 128 credit hours are required for every student in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. All degree seeking, CLASS students must complete a specific number of General Education (GenEd) requirements which are comprised of University and College requirements.  This is in addition to the credits for their major field of study. Students are responsible for ensuring the appropriate selection of courses to satisfy GenEd requirements. Students are highly encouraged to consult with both their general education advisor and faculty advisor regarding the applicability of selected courses each semester. Major-Field Requirements


Students must complete a minimum of 40 credits and maintain a 2.25 GPA in Communication to graduate with a major in Communication Management which consists of 2 School Core Courses, 2 Communication Dynamic Courses, 2 Skills Courses, 2 Theory Courses, 1 Capstone Course, and 1 Communication Management Elective. All School of Communication Majors are required to successfully complete COM 101 - Principles of Communication  and COM 303 - Communication Inquiry  with a minimum grade of C. Transfer students must obtain at least 20 credit hours including a capstone from Communication Management courses at Cleveland State University.

Notes


  • Special Topics courses ( ), Senior Seminar in Communication ( ), and Internship ( ) may fulfill one of the above categories with the permission of the Division Director.
  • Additional courses must be approved by the Division Director
  • Courses may only fulfill one requirement; for example, a course taken to fulfill a CMGT theory requirement cannot also fulfill the CMGT dynamics requirement.
