Sustainable Urban Development Minor

The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs offers a certificate program in Sustainable Urban Development for students interested in moving cities toward sustainable economic, social and ecological practices. The program is central to the Levin College’s mission to provide academic and professional education, expertise, and research capabilities to enhance the quality of life in urban communities.

Urban development is the process by which cities remake their physical and economic environments. It includes understanding the role of business and real estate markets, public policy, and planning, to recreate cities that are prosperous and offer a high quality of life.

Sustainable urban development includes the principles and practices of sustainability: ensuring environmental quality, restoring ecological function of urban areas, and supporting attraction of sustainable businesses such as renewal energy and green housing.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow planners and economic development professionals to understand the spatial manifestations of sustainability and make better decisions in areas such as land use, transportation, natural resource management, environmental quality, public health, market and business location, housing, and real estate.
