A Message from President Ronald Berkman

Welcome to Cleveland State University and congratulations as you begin or continue your journey through graduate school. We’re proud that you chose to advance your studies with us — at a University with an outstanding record of excellence in more than 80 graduate degree, certificate and licensure programs, among a  community of scholars who share your drive to learn and succeed.

Our graduate students contribute vast life experience and maturity, as well as cultural and ethnic diversity, to make our campus an exciting, engaged learning environment. Engaged Learning connects students, ideas and real-world experience. It is what sets Cleveland State apart, allowing students to make a difference in their community and providing opportunities not found at other schools.

And students here set the standard for excellence. The Monte Ahuja College of Business ranks number 8 in the nation for students passing the CPA exam among first-time takers with  graduate degrees. The passage rate on national and state licensure exams for teachers and health care professionals approaches or achieves 100 percent each year. At Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, students are known for outstanding performance on the state bar exam; the class of 2008 achieved an 89 percent pass rate, while the class of 2007 had the highest pass rate in the region (90 percent) and the second highest in the state. These are just a few examples.

It’s no secret that Cleveland State is experiencing a time of extraordinary growth and change. Our reputation for leading edge research continues to expand nationally, with research awards doubling over the last five years. That’s good news for our graduate students, who are actively involved in advanced research in wind energy, heart disease, urban planning, nano technology and hundreds of other fields, working in partnership with our renowned faculty as well as with businesses and health care organizations around the globe that include the Cleveland Clinic and NASA.

In addition, our three Centers of Excellence – in health professions, biomedical research and the next generation economy – will have a profound effect on the region’s and the state’s  economic recovery, generating the leaders, jobs and industries of the future. Our “extreme makeover” is enriching our campus with $500 million in new construction and student-focused amenities, including a new Student Center, residence village, College of Law improvements, and a state-of-the-art home for our College of Education and Human Services.

The pages that follow list brief descriptions of our graduate and professional programs. The Graduate Dean and the College of Graduate Studies staff are prepared to explore with you the best possible fit between your personal goals and our graduate offerings. Our faculty and staff welcome the opportunity to discuss with you how our programs might best accommodate your interests in advanced study.

Best wishes for success in your graduate studies. You’ll find your experience at Cleveland State University to be both intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding.
