PHL 377 - Philosophy and Language[3 credit(s)] Prerequisite: One course in philosophy. An examination of the philosophical origins of traditional grammar and of transformational grammar; pertinent insights by thinkers, including Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Hume, Wittgenstein, Chomsky, and Katz; special attention to the tenability of claims made by transformational grammarians from the viewpoint of philosophical consistency.
