HIS 326 - African American History Through Sacred Music[3 credit(s)] This course traces the history of African American sacred music from its African roots, through the nineteenth century spiritual to the twentieth century hymns, gospels and contemporary Christian compositions. This musical heritage will be analyzed within the larger context of African American social and cultural history, with an emphasis on understanding African American church culture as a buffer against racial and other forms of discrimination.
