EDB 604 - Equity in Community and Classroom Settings: Promoting Youth and Young Adult Well-Being

[3 credit(s)]
The purpose of the course is to build theoretical and empirical understandings of inequities that shape youth and young adult experiences and trajectories in their communities and schools. The course is rooted in the theory of intersectionality, and foregrounds understandings of how intersecting structures and forms of oppression position youth in various ways in institutions and other social spaces. Drawing on the work of Black and Brown educators, community activists, and social scientists, the course provides knowledge and skills in supporting youth and young adult cultural identity development and opportunities for individual and collective agency in shaping their present and future experiences. Students will also develop knowledge and skills related to critical pedagogies and equity-focused relational practices for working with and nurturing the strengths of youth in schools and communities.
