AST 200 - Introduction to Africana Studies to the 1880s

This course offers an introduction to the study of Africa, the U.S., the Caribbean and other diasporas. It uses a multidisciplinary approach to introduce students to the history, art, music, and literature of the African Diaspora. The course will examine the history and culture of people of African descent from early African kingdoms to emancipation in the Americas and Caribbean to African nations’ resistance to European colonialism and imperialism to the 1880s. While not the specific aim, this course will introduce students to the discipline of Africana Studies, its founders and theoretical foundations, as well as provide basic knowledge for those interested in pursuing the Major.
