The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies is administered by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. This degree provides a broad-based liberal education in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. It is especially appropriate for students who wish to take an active role in shaping their studies.
The B.A. in Liberal Studies differs from traditional degree programs in allowing maximum freedom and flexibility in course selection. Students may organize a program of study that suits their own academic, professional, or other personal goals such as a foundation for graduate study, a prerequisite for professional training, or an exploratory intellectual experience in its own right. The major can often be combined with one or more academic minors or certificates.
Liberal Studies is for any student whose academic interests do not fit well into a pre-designed major but are supported by Cleveland State University's course offerings. The major may not be appropriate for students who intend to enter a career or graduate program requiring specialized training, or who want to avoid coursework in any of the major's distribution areas.
Admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies Program
Admission to the Liberal Studies Program requires a letter of application. Students interested in Liberal Studies must meet with the program Director before applying. The student's major becomes effective the semester after the letter of application is submitted. A minimum GPA of 2.75 earned cumulatively or in the most recent 24 semester hours is required for admission.
Majors in Liberal Studies should meet each term with the Director to discuss their progress and select their upcoming courses. Students who are completing a minor or who are planning graduate study or other professional training should also consult with the appropriate school or department for advice.
