The Program

The Master of Arts in Global Interactions (MAGI) is a professional program that prepares students for employment in private, nonprofit, and governmental enterprises that have international operations. The program is not recommended for students seeking a Ph.D. or other higher academic degrees. Rather, it focuses on the development of skills needed in the modern, globalized marketplace. The program’s approach is based on three principles:

  • Interdisciplinary breadth – with coursework from Economics, Communication, Modern Languages, included in core offerings. Additional coursework from History, Law, Accounting, Finance, Management and Labor Relations, and Marketing may be chosen for specializations.
  • Balance – blending the advantages of traditional academic coursework and courses focusing on practical, problem-solving skills
  • Demand – The curriculum responds to the demands of our key stakeholders, and prepares students for the complexities of the global economy

Types of Applicants

Applicants are welcomed from virtually all academic backgrounds, but typically applicants have a background in either the social sciences or business. The strong emphasis on workplace skills is ideal for students who have just completed a baccalaureate degree but do not have significant work experience. Mid-career professionals will find that the program provides an academic challenge that will enhance and expand their skills beyond the traditional confines of the workplace.

Career Opportunities

The program is anchored by the assumption that the world is increasingly interdependent. As such, the skills offered by the program are relevant to virtually any profession. However, the program is more specifically oriented toward the following career areas:

  • International Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)
  • International Governmental Organizations (IGOs)
  • Government Agencies with an International Focus
  • International Businesses

Degree Requirements

In addition to meeting all University requirements, degree candidates must successfully complete at least 37 credits, including five core courses, a concentration of three courses, a team project and an internship. Students must also demonstrate competence in cross-cultural communication through the cross-cultural awareness requirement, which may require additional coursework. The curriculum is designed to give students a solid foundation in the scope and diversity of global interactions, an ability to communicate cross-culturally, a team-building exercise, and experience with a globally-engaged organization.

Concentration (choose one, 12 credits)

Cross Cultural Awareness Requirement (variable credit, based on options)

Any organization that operates internationally seeks employees capable of understanding and bridging cultural gaps and differences. The MAGI program consequently requires that each graduating student demonstrate cross-cultural competence in one of two ways:

Cross-Cultural Skills

  • Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI) (no credit)
  • Self-Awareness Workshop (no credit)
  • Or Study/Living Abroad (also 1 credit)
Note(s):

Study/living abroad consists of a significant academic or living experience outside of the U.S. that fully immerses the individual into a non-US culture. These must be approved by the program director to satisfy this requirement

Language for Business

Global Business Interactions Concentration and either FRN 203 (4 credits) or SPN 203 (4 credits)

Exit Requirement (2 courses, 5 credits total)
