The department offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in mathematics. The mathematics requirements for the two degrees are identical; the difference between them is the number of science credits that are required (see below: B.A., B.S.).
Requirements of the College of Sciences and Health Professions:
A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for a degree, of which 42 semester credit hours must be earned in 300- and/or 400-level courses.
For the Bachelor of Arts degree:
Mathematics Courses - Eight Courses
Electives
21 credits in mathematics numbered 300 or above (excluding MTH 325, MTH 326, MTH 327, MTH 328, MTH 329, MTH 330, MTH 347, MTH 421, MTH 431, MTH 435, MTH 436, and MTH 467.) At least nine of these credits must be from courses numbered 400 or above. For the Bachelor of Science degree:
Mathematics / Physics courses - Ten courses
Choose a minimum of 12 additional science credits from the following:
MTH 347, MTH 421, MTH 431, MTH 435, MTH 436, MTH 467 or courses from any of the following fields: Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Physics or Computer and Information Science. These credits must be numbered 200 or above. The courses in computer and information science that meet this requirement are those that satisfy CIS major-field requirements (excluding CIS 306). Electives
21 credits in mathematics courses numbered 300 or above (excluding MTH 325, MTH 326, MTH 327, MTH 328, MTH 329, MTH 330, MTH 347, MTH 421, MTH 431, MTH 435, MTH 436, and MTH 467). At least nine of these credits must be from courses numbered 400 or above. Second Major for Computer Science Students
Students in either the CIS or CSC program, who choose a concentration in mathematics can, by suitably choosing electives and with a few additional credits in mathematics, complete all mathematics requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in mathematics. See your CIS Department adviser and an adviser in the Mathematics Department for further information. Secondary Teacher Licensure
The CSUteach Program offers licensure programs in mathematics and physics with a BA or BS in mathematics. The licensure program requires coursework from the College of Science and the College of Education and Human Services. Contact the CSUteach Program for education courses required for undergraduate and Post-Baccalaureate Secondary Teacher Licensure programs (216-687-3709 or JH 345).
Two teacher preparation tracks are available:
- BA or BS in Mathematics, Integrated Mathematics Licensure, Grades 7-12
- BS in Mathematics, Mathematics and Physics Licensure, Grades 7-12
See also Education, Adolescent and Young Adult with Licensure, Grades 7-12 .
BA or BS in Mathematics, Integrated Mathematics Licensure, Grades 7-12
Mathematics Courses (50 credit hours)
Science Courses (22 credit hours)
- For a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics, no requirement beyond CSU science course requirements
- For a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics, an additional 22 science credits distributed in any combination of the following: MTH 347, MTH 421, MTH 431, MTH 435, MTH 436, MTH 467 or courses from any of the following fields: Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Physics or Computer and Information Science. These credits must be numbered 200 or above. The courses in computer and information science that meet this requirement are those that satisfy CIS major-field requirements (excluding CIS 306). These 22 credits must include (or ) and (or ).
Note:
Students will also need to complete additional CSUteach education courses. Please see the College of Education, CSUteach program catalog for details.
BS in Mathematics, Mathematics & Physics Licensure, Grades 7-12
Mathematics Courses (50 credit hours)
Physics Courses (20 credit hours)
Additional Science Courses (11 credit hours)
Note:
Students will also need to complete additional CSUteach education courses. Please see the College of Education, CSUteach program catalog for details.
Honors Program/University Scholars Requirements
A University Honors/Scholars Program student will be able to graduate with Honors in Mathematics by completing the general requirements of the University Scholar Program and all of the following:1.
- All requirements for the mathematics major (BS or BA);
- One 4 credit 400 level course, numbered MTH 493H (this course is required in addition to the credit hour requirements for the mathematics major);
- One 4 credit research experience occurring by taking MTH 496H Honors Project
Please Note: Mathematics major gaining high school licensure currently do 7 credits more of upper level mathematics courses than are required for the mathematics major. An honors/scholars student in this situation will be able to use MTH 493H as one of their 400 level required courses. Thus, there are not any additional requirements placed on honors/scholars mathematics majors going for high school licensure.
