Admission Information

Students with a wide range of backgrounds are encouraged to enroll in the program. Applicants who may be interested in pursuing this course of study include those who hold undergraduate degrees in:

  • Economics
  • Political Science
  • History
  • Communication
  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Urban Studies
  • Business Administration

In addition to the College of Graduate Studies standards for admission, applicants for the MLRHR program must meet the following requirements:

All applicants are required to take either the GMAT or GRE and submit results before being considered for admission. These scores must meet minimum requirements for the applicant to be considered for admission. In no case will a score on any dimension of these tests that is at or below the 10th percentile meet minimum requirements for admission.

Students who are accepted but scored below the 25th percentile on the quantitative section of the GMAT/ GRE are required to take OSM 500; those accepted but scoring below the 20th percentile on the verbal section of the GMAT/ GRE are required to take the following remedial courses in business communication: GAD 502  (16th through 19th percentile); GAD 501  and GAD 502  (below the 16th percentile).

Program Design

The MLRHR program consists of a minimum of thirty-three semester hours beyond the baccalaureate degree. The program is designed to accommodate students who are currently working. While a majority of enrollees are part-time students taking courses in the evening, the program also enrolls many full-time students. Full-time students usually take three semesters to complete the degree.

The program is divided into four components:

Elective Courses

(9 credits)

Students select an additional nine credit hours to complete the requirements for the degree. Elective course selections must be made with the consent of the student’s program advisor. Two elective courses must be at the 600 level.

Practice assessment examination

All students admitted into the MLRHR program after Summer 2004 are required to purchase and take the online HRCI assessment examination in their last semester of study. Scores from this practice assessment examination will be used as part of an ongoing MLRHR program review. Students documenting current PHR or SPHR certification may have this requirement waived.

Internships

Internships are available to students to provide an opportunity to gain practical experience in human resources or labor relations.

Non-Degree Students

Non-degree students are strictly limited to a maximum of twelve credits taken on a graduate non-degree basis. Non-degree students are only permitted to enroll in the following courses: MGT 501 , MGT 577 , OSM 500 OSM 503 GAD 501 , GAD 502 , and ECN 503  with the permission of the Department Chair. Admission requirements for non-degree students are the same as stated above, including GRE/ GMAT requirements. Successful completion of courses within the allowable twelve credit hours does not waive the admission requirement of 1000 points.

Academic Standards

The MLRHR student must maintain an average of “B” or better in all course work attempted. Receipt of a grade of less than “B” in three courses and failure to maintain a “B” average, or the receipt of a grade of “F” in two courses, will result in dismissal from the program.
