Specialization leading to a Master of Education degree.
The Elementary and Secondary Education (Advanced and Applied Teaching) Specialization is intended to provide in-service teachers with a curriculum sequence strongly connected to the context of their classroom practice. The focus on advancing teaching skills relies on up-to-date principles of effective teaching, learning, and assessment in urban, diverse educational settings. The specialization combines hands-on applications of student-centered pedagogy with tenets of reflective teaching. Built around a common College Core, specialized coursework in conflict resolution, data-driven classroom instruction, and classroom management is integrated with required classes in educational research, social issues impacting education in the 21st century, educational psychology, as well as academic content-specific methods. The culminating exit requirement is an action research project that requires candidates to apply the advanced teaching skills addressed throughout the program to their own professional practice. This Elementary and Secondary Education (Advanced and Applied Teaching) program does not lead to any teacher licensure or endorsement. For further information, contact the Department of Curriculum and Foundations at (216) 687-4577.
