Mechanical Engineering, Accelerated 4+1 BME/MSME


The Department of Mechanical Engineering also offers an accelerated program that enables students to earn a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree as well as a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 5 years.

Admission to Program


Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher at the time of application. Honors students are strongly encouraged to participate. Students who are interested in this program may submit applications upon completing their first semester of the junior year. Applications must be submitted by the end of the junior year. This application policy also applies to transfer students who have equivalent junior status. Students in this program must take 500-level courses in year 4, and 500-level or 600-level courses in year 5, as indicated in the BME/MSME Dual-Program Sheet.

Program Requirements


Minimum number of credits required to earn both degrees: 149 (thesis option) and 152 (non-thesis option).

Students who are accepted for an accelerated 4+1 program may apply or transfer a maximum of 12 graduate credit hours taken while an undergraduate. No additional graduate credit hours taken as an undergraduate may be applied or transferred to the graduate record. Only grades of B or higher can be transferred to the graduate program.

Course Requirements

All bachelor’s degree requirements must be met. 12 credits of 500-level MCE courses must be taken (in addition to, or as approved substitutions for undergraduate course requirements) in year 4 while completing the bachelor’s degree.

500-level and/or 600-level courses will be taken in year 5 as a graduate student.

The 12 credits of 500-level coursework completed during undergraduate studies will be applied to both the bachelor’s degree and the master’s degree. Only grades of B or higher can be transferred to the graduate program.

GPA Requirement

Students must maintain a 3.00 or higher GPA to remain in the program.
