Leadership, Educational (with principal licensure), M.Ed.


Educational Leadership Program


Specialization leading to a Education, M.Ed.  degree.

Thirty hours leading to a degree and principal licensure at eligible grade levels.

Introduction

The Cleveland State University Masters in Educational Leadership program is based on a conceptual framework of the Principal as a Visionary Leader. Graduates achieve outcomes reflecting deep knowledge of both theory and best practices of exemplary leadership in urban and suburban schools. Each course is aligned with national and state standards for educational leaders. Broad themes of equity, diversity, and social justice are embedded throughout the program. Graduates understand the significance of engaging with their communities as well as the critical importance of creating and sustaining school cultures that enhance teaching and learning.

Coursework includes the study of leadership constructs, organizational finance and facilities management, education law, professional development, educational research, and leadership practicums in the field.

Admission

Applicants for the degree and professional principal license must:

  1. Fulfill the College of Graduate Studies requirements  for admission, as described in this Catalog.
  2. Have taken one course in each of the following three areas at either the undergraduate or graduate level:
    1. Curriculum theory and instruction
    2. Social foundations
    3. Human development
  3. Individuals seeking admission to Educational Leadership and Principal Licensure programs must have a teaching license or a pupil services license which would include individuals working as School Counselors, Psychologists, Nurses, Audiologists, Social Workers, Speech-language Pathologists, and Orientation and Mobility Specialists. To be endorsed for the Principal license, the candidate must have at least two years of successful experience teaching or working under a Pupil Services license at the grade levels for which Principal licensure is sought.
  4. Satisfy any other requirements the State of Ohio may establish to be eligible for a professional principal license.

Based on the applicant’s prior licensure and teaching experience, the university will determine eligibility for one or more of the three possible grade-level bands for licensure (PreK-6, 4-9, 5-12).
