Software Engineering, Graduate Certificate

Introduction

The graduate certificate program in software engineering is offered by the Department of Computer Science.

Software engineering is the application of a systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software systems. These software systems include large-scale enterprise systems, medium-scale systems, Web-based applications, desktop applications, and embedded systems.

Admission Information

Applicants should have a background in computer engineering or computer science. Prerequisite knowledge is required as indicated below. Applicants with baccalaureate degrees in related fields also will be considered for admission, but they may be required to take additional prerequisite courses. Credits earned for prerequisite courses cannot be used to meet the graduate certificate requirements.

All applicants must demonstrate prerequisite knowledge in the following areas. They can demonstrate their knowledge by undergraduate courses or professional experiences.

Data structures and algorithms Probability and statistics
Programming languages Computer organization
Databases Computer networks
Discrete mathematics Operating systems

Admission to the certificate program requires a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of 2.75. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required with a minimum score of 80th percentile in Quantitative section. GRE may be waived for students with GPA 3.0 or higher, as specified in the Graduate Catalog. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for all international students.

Credits earned for the certificate may be applied toward a graduate degree as approved by the student’s graduate program director and in keeping with the policies of the College of Graduate Studies.

Certificate Requirements


The program consists of sixteen credit hours of courses in the Master of Science in Software Engineering program. They must include the following courses. The remaining four credit hours may be any courses that count toward Master of Science in Software Engineering or Master of Computer Science degree.
