Middle Childhood Education

Specialization leading to a Master of Education  degree.

(38 credits)

This specialization provides advanced study in the field of middle childhood education with particular emphasis being given to the design and delivery of effective mathematics or science instruction in grades four through nine. This Middle Childhood Education program does not provide for teacher licensure or any type of endorsement. Individuals seeking a middle childhood license or to add science and/or mathematics to a middle school licensure should contact the Education Student Service Center, at (216) 687-4625, early in their program for further information.

Built around a common College Core, specialized course work in mathematics or science is integrated with required offerings in educational research, social foundations, human development, and instructional development as outlined below. The curriculum focuses on the development of practices associated with high-quality mathematics or science education for children ages eight through fourteen, with diverse cultural backgrounds and abilities. Candidates will be actively engaged in implementing inquiry teaching principles and engaging in self-reflection on learning and teaching during the field-based and research courses. The culminating exit requirement is an action research project that requires candidates to weave aspects of the content-based courses they participated in throughout the program into their own teaching.

For further information, contact the Department of Teacher Education at (216) 687-4600.
