ARB 440 - Field Study[2-4 credit(s)] Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. This course is designed to provide students who participate in an Arabic study abroad program with practical cultural experiences based on interactions with real-life situations. The course has two major objectives: first, to further improve student language skills in Arabic; and, second, to enhance student understanding of the multifaceted aspects of Arabic culture. To this end, students will be visiting public places and communal sites in the city where the study abroad takes place. Such is the case with markets, coffee shops, and museums. By visiting these places and interviewing local residents, student will enrich their acquaintance with the contemporary life and history of the country and aspects of Arabic culture. The hosting institute will facilitate making contacts between the students and organizations and social service agencies. Students have to complete at least two semesters of Arabic language before taking advantage of this course. Due to the unstable political situation in the Arab world, there are three main destinations for Arabic study abroad programs: Jordan, Morocco, & Oman.
