SOC 525 - Sustainable Development

[3 credit(s)]
This course uses the overarching concept of sustainability to global and local development process. We will address seven goals, including five articulated by the UN: 1. Sustainable communities and cities; 2. Climate Change; 3. Land (forests, agriculture, biodiversity); 4. Life below water (oceans and freshwater); 5. Responsible production and consumption; and two more of relevance to the social sciences: Indigenous Communities and Gender/Development. The objective throughout this course is to foster multidisciplinary systems thinking skills - seeing and working with the interdependence and interconnectedness of social, environmental and development variables. There are no “one size fits all” models of sustainable development. There are countless applied examples that we will examine carefully.
