[3 credit(s)]
Prerequisite: Graduate standing. This 3 credit hour course explores the many links between incarceration and health, how correctional health consequences are disproportionately levied against people of color, the poor, and the undereducated, and the various applied research methodologies used to understand these consequences. This course is organized topically as follows: (1) challenges associated with the conduct of correctional health research; (2) a review of the health-related inequalities tied to carceral contact and; (3) experiences of illness in correctional facilities. This course relies heavily on writing, seminar-style discussions, and practical application of multiple research methods to accomplish its aims.
