HIS 387 - Modern Middle East[3 credit(s)] Pre-req: Gen Ed Eng/Comp. This class examines the most important factors that influenced the development of the modern Middle East between the 18th through the 21st centuries. Subjects include colonial empires in the Middle East, the impact of Westernization and modernity, the establishment of nation states, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Iranian revolution, Cold War politics, influence of oil, political Islam and terrorism, America’s involvement, and the Middle East post 9/11. Although this is an upper division class, no previous background knowledge of Middle East History is necessary.
