BIO 480 - Bacteriology I[3 credit(s)] Prerequisites: Admission into the Cleveland Clinic School of Medical Laboratory Sciences clinical training program. Corequisites: All Session II courses must be taken concurrently. Lectures present the principles of basic laboratory techniques, microbiology lab safety, specimen collection, handling and infection control, application of quality assurance, quality control and proper specimen handling and storage. Additional lectures will cover the medically relevant Gram positive species. Pathogenic species are discussed in comparison to normal flora. Laboratory work emphasizes isolation, identification, and antibiotic susceptibility testing using stock organisms and clinical cultures.
