MTH 114 - Intensive Foundations of Quantitative Literacy

Prerequisite: Suitable placement-exam score. This course is designed to increase students’ quantitative and logical reasoning abilities, strengthen mathematical abilities that are needed in other disciplines, and encourage students to take other courses in the mathematical sciences. Using class discussion and collaborative work in small groups, students develop quantitative reasoning skills including interpretation, representation, calculation, analysis, synthesis, examination of assumptions. Students explore numeracy, mathematical modeling, statistics and probability. Students present their mathematical ideas to others both orally and through well-written analysis and synthesis of ideas. Only 3 credits of MTH 114 or MTH 116 will count towards graduation requirements and fulfillment of the quantitative literacy requirement. MTH 114 requires class contact time of 5 credit hours and will be applied towards both financial aid and term billing as 5 credit hours.
