BIO 478 - Plant Ecology[ Prerequisites: BIO 202 AND a 300 level BIO/ EVS course, or permission of instructor. Corequisite: Bio 479. This course is an overview of plant ecology, focusing on basic physiology, plant evolution and dynamics, and community interactions, including positive and exploitative interactions such as pathogens and herbivores. Topics will cover scales from individuals, populations, and ecosystems to global patterns. Students will develop skills in critical thinking, application of ecological concepts, reading the primary and secondary literature, and scientific writing. Basic and applied topics will be covered, with an emphasis on urban plant ecology, plant invasions, and agriculture.
