MTX 419 - Music Therapy and Communication: Understanding Therapeutic Needs[3 credit(s)] Prerequisites: Music therapy major or permission of instructor. If music therapy major, successful completion of MUS/MTX 290, MUS/MTX 291, and MUS/MTX 391. In this course, students will learn about basic structures and functions of speech, language, and hearing systems; music and speech/language neural processing; typical and disordered speech and language; communication and swallowing needs and the intentional, therapeutic application of musical elements to support these needs; and music therapy and speech-language pathology scopes of practice. Music therapy majors must earn at least a “B-” for this course to be counted towards the music therapy bachelor’s degree.
