STA 424 - Probability and Mathematical Statistics[3 credit(s)] Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or better in MTH 281 or MTH 283, MTH 284 or MTH 288, and a 300-level mathematics course or departmental approval. This rigorous calculus-based probability and mathematical statistics course provides a solid basis for further study in statistical inference and preparation for the actuarial probability exam. Topics covered include combinatorics, probability rules, random variables, commonly used discrete and continuous distributions, joint distributions, expectation, moment generating functions, limit theorems, and maximum likelihood. Undergraduate students who take STA 424 can register for an additional credit hour (STA 425) if interested in the more advanced topics covered in STA 524 and the actuarial exam. This course will count towards the mathematics major and mathematics minor but does not count toward the statistics minor.
