AST 391 - History of South Africa to 1900[3 credit(s)] Pre-req: Gen Ed Eng/Comp. This course focuses on the making of South Africa, specifically, and the Southern African region, in general. The time-span is from the earliest time possible to circa 1900. Key themes include the early African migration and settlement of Southern Africa; South African people and cultures; state systems; modes of production and exchange; settler colonization of South Africa; slavery and the slave trade; social, economic, and political revolutions in the 19th century Southern Africa; and South Africa’s relationship with its neighbors in the Southern African region. AST 391 is a cross-listed course with HIS 391.
