SWK 503 - Human Behavior and the Social Environment: The Person in Context[3 credit(s)] Prerequisites: GSW Major. This course prepares students with a solid understanding of the U.S. social welfare system in a global context. It examines the philosophical, historical, and socioeconomic foundations of social welfare and the evolution of social policy and the social work profession in the United States. The implications of social policy and programs, and the role of the social work profession to advance human rights and social, racial, economic, and environmental justice will be discussed. This course helps students be equipped with a solid understanding of how racism and oppression influence social welfare policy. Students learn to use policy analysis tools to understand and critique the history and current structures of social policies and services and the role of policy in service delivery through rights-based, anti-oppressive, and anti-racist lenses.
