International Film Minor

The International Film Minor is an interdisciplinary program with an international scope that offers students a broad, culturally and internationally-oriented perspective from which to approach the study of film. The curriculum for the minor draws on the film expertise of CSU faculty across the university by including the courses from five different academic units: The School of Communication, the Departments of English, World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, Theatre and Dance, and Urban Studies. The minor also builds on the relationship that Cleveland State has established with the annual Cleveland International Film Festival. The CIFF offers students a rich opportunity to experience international film and participate in discussions with filmmakers who attend the festival in Cleveland each Spring.

For more information, contact the School of Communication: (216/687-4630); or the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures: (216/687-4646).

Required Courses:

The minor in International Film consists of 18 credits including 6 credits in two required core classes, and an additional 12 credits of electives that must be chosen from two different departments.

The two core classes in the Communications School, which are offered each semester, provide a sound foundation for students who then choose elective courses in two additional departments, one of which must be World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (includes WLC and SPN courses). A total of 3 credits from a course or courses offered by the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures are required to assure that course work has an international focus.

NOTE: Due to the interdisciplinary and international focus of the minor, students majoring in Film and Digital Media may only count 6 credits toward both their major and the minor in International Film Studies.

A. Core Courses (6 credit hours)

B. Electives (12 credit hours)

Distributed among at least three departments as follows: A minimum of 3 credits from a course or courses offered by the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (WLC/SPN), and a course from at least one other department outside of Communication (COM) or World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (WLC/SPN), such as English (ENG), Theatre and Dance (THE), or Urban Studies (UST).
