Chemistry, Accelerated 4+1 BS/MS

Application to the Program

Students should indicate their interest in the 4+1 Accelerated BS/MS to the Undergraduate Program Director after the completion of their sophomore year of study (typically following the successful completion of the CHM 331 /332  Organic Chemistry sequence).

Program Requirements

For the students in the 4+ 1 program, the B.S. is awarded after the completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours and all General Education, University, College and Major Field requirements, as is the case for students in the conventional B.S. programs. The M.S. degree is earned after the students have completed a minimum of 32 graduate credit hours and all coursework required of students in the conventional M.S. in program.

Students who have been admitted to the 4+1 program after the completion of 90 hours, but fail to meet subsequent program requirements (GPA 3.0) revert to conventional student status and must meet all B.S. in Chemistry requirements. Since the 4+1 program in Chemistry allows at least 21 credits of Chemistry electives, the double-counted classes taken at the graduate level can be applied towards their BS degree. They may then re-apply to the conventional M.S. program. If admitted, these students are subject to conventional M.S. program policies and requirements.

Required Courses to Complete the BS Program

Students complete all requirements of the BS Chemistry as listed elsewhere in the undergraduate catalog. However, 4+1 Accelerated students will make the following substitutions (11 credit hours):

CHM 502 Biochemistry I in place of CHM 402 - Biochemistry I

CHM 503 Biochemistry II in place of CHM 403 - Biochemistry II

CHM 531 Advanced Organic Chemistry in place of CHM 431 - Advanced Organic Chemistry

ONE 3 credit hour 500-level Chemistry course in place of a 300/400-level Chemistry elective

The courses above will be applied toward traditional upper-level courses for the BS, as well as counted toward the MS degree.
