Description

Business Economics is a specialized area of economics that uses economic and quantitative analysis to make strategic business, financial, and management decisions. Business economists study the allocation of scarce resources, and the resulting forces that shape our business, economy and society both locally and globally.

What careers can this major prepare you for?

An undergraduate degree in business economics can lead to many career opportunities in the public sector, financial institutions, marketing institutions, investment institutions, consulting firms, market research organizations, mergers and acquisitions departments, insurance companies, and international organizations. Business economics can serve as good preparation for graduate programs in economics, law, public administration, international affairs, management science, or business. Students should clearly define their goals and seek experiences and skills necessary to reach those goals. Samples of jobs held by CSU graduate with a finance degree include: financial analyst, economic forecaster, internal auditor, benefits analyst, claims examiner for the Social Security Administration, portfolio administrator, business analyst, bank manager, market research specialist, investment analyst, director of Finance.

Skills developed within this major include: data acquisition and analysis techniques; critical thinking; report writing; competency with relevant software; communication; professionalism and ethics; and the ability to identify economic trends.

Major-Field Requirements

In addition to the B.B.A. degree program’s required core courses, students must complete the Business Economics major requirements:

A grade of “C” or higher is required for all direct major Business Economics courses.
A grade of “C” or higher is required for ECN 201 Macroeconomics and ECN 202 Microeconomics or the course/s must be repeated.
Business Economics core courses in which a grade lower than a “C” was earned must be repeated.
Business Economic elective courses in which a grade lower than a “C” was earned must either be repeated or substituted by completing a different elective from the list of Business Economic electives
Business concentration courses in which a grade lower than a “C” was earned must either be repeated or substituted by completing a different elective from the list of business concentration core electives.

Business Economic Core Required Economic Courses (9 credit hours)

Business Economics core courses in which a grade lower than a “C” was earned must be repeated.

Business Economic Electives - Choose 5 Economic Courses (15 credit hours)

Business Economic elective courses in which a grade lower than a “C” was earned must either be repeated or substituted by completing a different elective from the list of Business Economic electives.

Business Concentration Core - 12 credit hours of any College of Business 300/400 level coursework OR selection of a business minor or certificate

Business Concentration Core will allow the student to select 12 credit hours of 300/400 level business coursework from any business discipline OR selection of a business minor or certificate to satisfy the Business concentration core for the Business Economics major.

Business concentration courses in which a grade lower than a “C” was earned must either be repeated or substituted by completing a different elective from the list of business concentration core electives.

Honors Requirements (15 honors credits in addition to BBA requirements)

ECN 497 - Honors Essay (or BUS 499H - Honors Thesis in Business Administration )
BUS 490 - Business Internship (under the supervision of a College of Business faculty member)
MGT 465 - Management Strategy & Policy
ECN 301 - Intermediate Macroeconomics

Honors Courses

Honors students in Business Economics would be required to take at least one honors course (3-4 credit hours) from the College of Business and two honors courses from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Science Department of Economics. All honors courses are created via a contract between the honors student and a cooperating Business faculty member (for the business contract course) or an Economics faculty member (for the two honors economics contract courses). The one business related honors course must be selected from the following business areas: Finance, Accounting, or Operations and Supply Chain Management.

Business Economic Courses

In addition to ECN 301 , honors students must complete four additional 300 - 400 level economics electives (including two honors courses in Economics) beyond the BBA core requirements for a minimum of 15 credits.

The honors candidate must maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 3.5.
