CVE 415 - Structural Reliability(4 credits) Prerequisite(s): CVE 413 , ESC 310 . Structural reliability depends on a precise definition of failure, which is usually specified by loss of service. In order to quantify reliability, a basic review of reliability mathematics, including probability density functions and hazard rate functions, is provided. Aspects of Monte Carlo and decision tree analysis will be discussed as they relate to structural analysis. Since there is appreciable scatter in the failure strength of brittle materials (such as ceramics and concrete) the concepts of Weibull analysis and weakest link theory will be thoroughly discussed. Bundle theory and its relationship to composite materials will be introduced. Standard techniques to estimate statistical parameters such as linear and nonlinear regression analysis, as well as maximum likelihood estimation methods will be highlighted. Finally, issures relating to limit state functions, the reliability index, and approximate methods will be discussed.
