HIS 316 - History of the American West(4 credits) This course examines the significance of the Trans-Mississippi West in United States history from various interpretive perspectives. Topics include: nineteenth century exploration and settlement; impact of environment on evolution of western economies; race and ethnic relation; gender roles; the cowboy legacy; frontier violence; the West as myth and symbol; federal land and wilderness policies; the urban West; tourism and National Parks.
