MTH 301 - Introduction to Number Theory

(4 credits)
Prerequisite(s): A grade of “C” or better in at least one of the courses MTH 220 , MTH 281 , MTH 283 , MTH 284 , MTH 286 , or MTH 288 , or instructor permission. This course is an introduction to number theory and its applications. Topics covered include divisibility, greatest common divisor and Euclid’s algorithm, congruences and the algebra of congruence classes, the theorems of Fermat, and Euler, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, quadratic residues and primitive roots. Applications include cryptography, computer security and coding theory.
