PSC 323 - African Politics(4 credits) Unique and common patterns of political organization in Africa presented in a comparative framework; historical patterns, nature of colonial rule, impact on precolonial societies; struggle for Pan-Africanism, nationalism and liberation movements; character of postcolonial regimes. Other factors such as settler rule, racism, world economic organization and underdevelopment; domestic political responses to revolution, internal war, ethnic conflict, personal rule, patron-client relations, democratization, military intervention, institutional development, and development of civil society are explored.
