Linguistics, B.A.

Minimum hours required for major: 39

Minimum hours required for minor: 18

Special requirement: In order to earn a B.A. in Linguistics, a student must maintain an overall grade-point average of 2.5 or better, and a grade-point average of 3.0 or better in courses applied to the major.

Advising information: Freshmen and sophomores who are interested in majoring or minoring in Linguistics are advised to take LIN 120 - Introduction to Language and Linguistics , which counts as a Linguistics requirement. (Please see the GenEd 08 Courses for applicability. This course is cross-listed as ANT 120 . Students interested in Linguistics should contact the administrative home of the Linguistics Program, the Department of Anthropology, CB 119, 216.687.2414.

Foreign language requirement: The college’s foreign language requirement may be satisfied by taking a two-semester sequence of LIN 318  (4 credits each, cross-listed as ENG 318  or MLA 318 ) offered as Sanskrit, Old English, Old Norse, Mayan, or other languages. These also count as elective courses in the Linguistics major and minor.

Students preparing to teach English as a second language are advised to take courses in phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax, semantics, English grammar, applied linguistics, and teaching ESL. The Linguistics major is drawn from courses in anthropology, communication, education, English, modern languages, philosophy, psychology, and speech and hearing. Many students have found it advantageous to take a double major, combining linguistics with one of these fields.

Major-Field Requirements


 To earn a major in Linguistics, students must take at least 39 credits distributed among at least 10 courses. The number of credits in each course varies from 1 to 4, but most are 4 credits. Major course requirements are defined as follows:

I. Introductory course (ONE of the following – 4 hours):


Lower Division (open to freshman/sophomores as well as juniors/seniors)


- OR -

Upper Division (note this requires junior/senior status)


II. Core courses (23 hours minimum):
