The department offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in mathematics. The mathematics requirements for the two degrees are identical; the difference between them is the number of science credits that are required (see below: B.A., B.S.).

Requirements of the College of Sciences and Health Professions:

A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for a degree, of which 42 semester credit hours must be earned in 300- and/or 400-level courses.

Major-Field Requirements

For the Bachelor of Arts degree:

Electives

21 credits in mathematics numbered 300 or above (excluding MTH 325, MTH 326, MTH 327, MTH 328, MTH 329, MTH 330, MTH 347, MTH 421, MTH 431, MTH 435, MTH 436, MTH 467, and some offerings of MTH 497.)  At least nine of these credits must be from courses numbered 400 or above.

For the Bachelor of Science degree:

Choose a minimum of 12 additional science credits from the following:

MTH 347, MTH 421, MTH 431, MTH 435, MTH 436, MTH 467 or courses from any of the following fields: Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Physics or Computer and Information Science. These credits must be numbered 200 or above. The courses in computer and information science that meet this requirement are those that satisfy CIS major-field requirements (excluding CIS 306).

Electives

21 credits in mathematics courses numbered 300 or above (excluding MTH 325, MTH 326, MTH 327, MTH 328, MTH 329, MTH 330, MTH 347, MTH 421, MTH 431, MTH 435, MTH 436, MTH 467, and some offerings of MTH 497). At least nine of these credits must be from courses numbered 400 or above.

Second Major for Computer Science Students

Students in the CS program, who choose a concentration in mathematics can, by suitably choosing electives and with a few additional credits in mathematics, complete all mathematics requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in mathematics. See your EECS Department Adviser and an adviser in the Mathematics Department for further information.

Secondary Teacher Licensure

The CSUteach Program offers licensure programs in mathematics and physics with a BA or BS in mathematics. The licensure program requires coursework from the College of Science and the College of Education and Human Services. Contact the CSUteach Program for education courses required for undergraduate and Post-Baccalaureate Secondary Teacher Licensure programs (216-687-3709 or JH 345).

Two teacher preparation tracks are available:

  • BA or BS in Mathematics, Integrated Mathematics Licensure, Grades 7-12
  • BS in Mathematics, Mathematics and Physics Licensure, Grades 7-12

BA or BS in Mathematics, Integrated Mathematics Licensure, Grades 7-12

Science Courses (22 credit hours)

  • For a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics, no requirement beyond CSU science course requirements
  • For a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics, an additional 22 science credits distributed in any combination of the following: MTH 347, MTH 421, MTH 431, MTH 435, MTH 436, MTH 467 or courses from any of the following fields: Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Physics or Computer and Information Science. These credits must be numbered 200 or above. The courses in computer and information science that meet this requirement are those that satisfy CIS major-field requirements (excluding CIS 306). These 22 credits must include   (or  ) and   (or  ).
Note:

Students will also need to complete additional CSUteach education courses.  Please see the College of Education, CSUteach program catalog for details.

BS in Mathematics, Mathematics & Physics Licensure, Grades 7-12

Accelerated 4+1 BA or BS/MS

Through the BA+MS or BS+MS program, students may complete a BA or BS with a Master of Science degree in five years, instead of the six academic years normally required of full-time students. High performing undergraduate students may apply to the 5-year program after the second year of undergraduate study and, if accepted, complete bachelor’s and master’s coursework during the third, fourth and fifth year.

Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the admission requirements for the conventional MS program, to apply to the accelerated 4+1 program a student must:

  • Have completed 60 undergraduate credit hours
  • Have completed MTH 181, MTH 182, MTH 220, MTH 281, MTH 286, or MTH 288
  • Have earned a GPA of 3.5 in MTH 220, MTH 281, MTH 286, and MTH 288 and a 3.0 GPA overall.
  • File the Accelerated 4+1 Masters Program Application

For more information and curriculum plans go to http://www.csuohio.edu/sciences/mathematics/graduate-studies

Students who are accepted for an accelerated 4+1 program may apply or transfer a maximum of 12 graduate credit hours taken while an undergraduate to their graduate record. All credits requested for transfer must carry a letter grade of A, A-, B+, or B in graduate courses. No additional graduate credit hours taken as an undergraduate may be applied or transferred to the graduate record.

Honors Program/University Scholars Requirements

A University Honors/Scholars Program student will be able to graduate with Honors in Mathematics by completing the general requirements of the Honors or University Scholars Program and all of the following:

  1. Satisfy all requirements for the mathematics major (B.S. or B.A.);
  2. Complete two 400-level MTH Honors Contract courses, for a total of 6 honors credits. These must be chosen from courses that count toward a math degree. These courses may be counted toward the major as well.
  3. In place of MTH 496 Senior Project, complete MTH 496H Honors Project (3 credits)  with a C or better. The requirements for this course include all the requirements of MTH 496 plus an oral presentation of the student’s work.
