DESCRIPTION The integrated BA degree in English and Computer Science offers an interdisciplinary experience for students that merges literature, research, writing, and rhetoric, with theoretical and mathematical foundations of computing. The integrated degree offers students an opportunity to gain skills, knowledge, and experience in two areas (English and Computer Science), which is a growing necessity for employability today and beyond. WHAT CAREERS CAN THIS MAJOR PREPARE YOU FOR? Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Computer Science can work in a variety of interdisciplinary contexts such as software development, quality assurance, testing, content management, social media consulting, web design, technical documentation, user-experience analysis, mobile app design, and government positions in computer information and research. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree allows for a wide range of career opportunities. WHAT SKILLS ARE DEVELOPED WITHIN THIS MAJOR? Students learn a variety of skills from each core of the degree (English and Computer Science). English courses provide students with the abilities to do the following: write clearly, effectively, and persuasively; formulate a research project that investigates a substantial issue; conduct research using multiple sources; analyze language and writing to understand their formal, cultural, and historical dimensions; employ critical thinking to develop and advance an independent argument; report research findings effectively in an oral presentation. In Computer Science courses, students learn to apply principles of mathematics and science in a variety of contexts. They hone their ability to use the techniques, skills, and tools necessary for science and computing practice, as well as design and conduct experiments and analyze and interpret data. Two elective courses in Computer Science are required. Honors Program/University Scholars Requirements
Honors/Scholars students majoring in English and Computer Science must complete: The 12 Honors credits may be graduate courses and/or Honors Contract courses equally divided between English and Computer Science: - Graduate Course options: Any 500-level English or Computer Science graduate course for which the student has the prerequisites.
- Honors Contract options: Honors Contracts may be added to most 300-level or 400-level English or Computer Science courses. Students must reach out to the course instructor before the start of the semester to agree on an additional project, which may be more creative and/or experience-based than the rest of the coursework. Students will then record the agreement through the Honors Contract agreement form: https://honors.csuohio.edu/current-students/forms-3
ENG 496H All Honors/Scholars students in the B.A. in English and Computer Science program are required to complete an Honors research project in their senior year (ENG 496H ), as a culmination of their Honors experience. This project should represent the work and interest of the student and integrate English and Computer Science. Students completing this requirement should register for ENG 496H , supervised by a faculty member of the department English. A faculty member in Computer Science should also approve this project, at conception and completion. Academic Plan Students will consult with the Honors departmental faculty advisors in English and Computer Science, ideally in the spring of their sophomore year, to formulate an academic plan, in consultation with their Honors College advisor. |
