Description

The Computer Science and Design major involves designing, researching, and programming technological interfaces and products in a way that is easy and intuitive for people to adapt to and use. Computer Science curriculum covers the analysis, design, and implementation of information and computing systems. Design curriculum integrates software skills with creative decision-making as well as integrating human perspective into the design process.

Major Requirements

Degree candidates must attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.00 (C or better) for all work and at least 2.00 for all required courses - including technical electives - in the combined areas of engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, and chemistry.

Required Computer Science Courses - 32 credits

Required Design Courses - 24 credits

Mathematics and Engineering Core - 12 credits

Capstone - 3 credits

Honors Requirements

Honors students are required to complete:

at least 12 of their upper-level course credits as designated Honors credits
CIS 495H - Honors Research (3 credits) or ART 450 - Design Capstone (contract course)

Enrollment in CIS 495H or ART 450 should be approved by an advisor in either Computer Science or Design.

Honors Courses

The 12 Honors credits may be graduate courses and/or Honors Contract courses equally divided between Computer Science and Design:

Graduate courses: Any 500 level Computer Science graduate course for which the student has the prerequisites.
Contract courses: Most 300 level and 400 level Computer Science and Design courses can be expanded to become an honors course. This is referred to by the Honors Program as a “contract course.” This is done in collaboration among the undergraduate advisor, the honors advisor, and the course instructor. Students must reach out to the course instructor before the start of the semester to agree on an additional project, which may be more creative and/or experience-based than the rest of the coursework. Students will then record the agreement through the Honors Contract agreement form: https://honors.csuohio.edu/current-students

Academic Plan

Students will consult with the Honors departmental faculty advisors in Computer Science and Design, ideally in the spring of their sophomore year, to formulate an academic plan, in consultation with their Honors College advisor.
