DESCRIPTION

Studying Healthcare Management provides students with the basis to understand healthcare-topics such as healthcare management, healthcare delivery models, healthcare finance, marketing, healthcare law and healthcare information systems, along with a solid foundation of fundamental business knowledge. Also, the program requires completion of a healthcare concentration. The healthcare concentration allows students to pursue specialties such as healthcare informatics, various undergraduate minors from any discipline at CSU or prepare for graduate programs by completing corresponding undergraduate coursework.

WHAT CAREERS CAN THIS MAJOR PREPARE YOU FOR?

Graduates of the program will have career opportunities as health service managers, hospital administrators or healthcare technology manager with various organizations that include hospitals, clinics, health service providers, insurance organizations, nursing homes and healthcare financial/management based private and government organizations.

Healthcare Management majors develop a range of skills from planning and organizing with an understanding of current practices in the field of healthcare management. Additional, skills develop are Analytical skills, Critical thinking skills, Communication Skills, and Problem-solving skills.

Did you know Healthcare Management majors can earn a second degree - a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies from the College of Arts and Sciences?

Both majors, Healthcare Management and Africana Studies, can be completed in four years under supervised academic advising in the College of Business and the College of Arts and Sciences. Through this dual degree plan, students will expand their educational experience by taking courses in two different colleges that explore race, allyship, social justice, management, and public policy. The Healthcare Management degree is designed to address Cleveland’s need for diverse healthcare management, administrators, and talent, and to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing healthcare market. Completion of the required introductory business and healthcare core coursework with a final grade of C or better.

Pre-BS Degree: Healthcare Management Major Declaration Course Requirements

Hours Required for Degree

Minimum hours required for degree: 120

Minimum hours required for major: The Healthcare Management major requires completion of 30 credits from the business core, 31 credits from the Healthcare management core, and 24 credits from the HCM concentration with at least 42 credit hours from upper divisional 300/400 level courses.

Major Requirements

Graduation requirements: Minimum of a grade of C or higher in all HCM major-related courses (business core, Healthcare management core, and HCM concentration). HCM major courses (business core, Healthcare management core, and HCM concentration) in which a grade lower than a “C” was earned must be repeated.

Business Core: 30 hours

Healthcare Management Major Core: 31 hours

Healthcare Management Major Concentration: Interdisciplinary Knowledge: 24 hours

Concentration Options: Student must select 24 credits / 8 courses including two WAC courses among the 8 courses. Advised to use 8 courses to support healthcare management studies with interdisciplinary knowledge from current academic programs or previous academic studies. Listed below are suggested options.

Honors Program

The following upper-division requirements apply for honors students who select a major in Healthcare Management in the Monte Ahuja College of Business.

Students will be required to take a minimum of 15 credit hours of upper-division (i. e., 300- and 400-level) honors courses in the College of Business. General guidelines for these credit hours are given below. However, the specific courses that each student takes will be agreed upon by the student and the student’s honors advisor.

Business Honors Level I Requirements (9 Credit Hours)

The student will complete this requirement with business graduate 500 level courses to satisfy the BS Degree - Healthcare Management Major core and HCM Major concentration interdisciplinary knowledge core requirements.

Complete the following nine credit hours of 500 level graduate business healthcare management courses.

HCA 515 Medical Care Organization
HCA 555 Analysis of Health Care Markets

Business Honors Level II Requirements (6 Credit Hours)

The student will complete two of the following four courses as an Honors Contract* course to satisfy this requirement and to satisfy BS Degree - Healthcare Management Major core or HCM Major concentration interdisciplinary knowledge core requirements (6 credit hours).

*The student must select and enroll in any business honors contract course listed for the Business Honors Level II requirement a minimum of one semester prior to the semester the contract course will be completed. The student should contact their assigned professional business academic advisor regarding the enrollment of the business honors contract courses.
